Mère divorcée, Carol élève seule ses deux enfants Alicia 17 ans et Matt 13 ans. Un jour en quittant son bureau, Carol est témoin-dans un parking- du meurtre du procureur Adjoint assassiné par un dangereux gangster. Carol parvient à s'enfuir du parking et se rend immédiatement à la police où elle identifie le tueur. Mais celui-ci est parvenu à relever son numéro de plaque minéralogique. La police a besoin du témoignage de Carol. Ses enfants et elle vont alors bénéficier du programme de protection des témoins et vont devoir vivre sous une fausse identité et déménager.
