Stefano Mattioli, adolescent timide et sensible, a suivi ses études dans un pensionnat suisse. Son diplôme en poche, il envisage de devenir prêtre, et revient en Italie pour l'annoncer à son père, Leonardo, grand éditeur milanais. Ce dernier nourrit l'ambition de voir son fils lui succéder et emmène Stefano dans son entreprise. Le jeune homme, assistant à une entrevue difficile entre son père et un jeune magasinier que l'on accuse à tort d'un vol important, découvre la totale froideur de Leonardo devant le désarroi de son employé.
